Challenge: Mental illness among young people is increasing worldwide
- Globally, one in seven 10-19 year olds experience a mental disorder, accounting for 13% of the global burden of disease in this age group. (WHO, 2021)
- Depression, anxiety and behavioral disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability among young people. (WHO, 2021)
- Suicide is the fourth most common cause of death among 15-29 year olds. (WHO, 2021)
- The consequences of failing to address adolescent mental health extend into adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults. (WHO, 2021)
- Vulnerable areas are hit harder due to increased risk and vulnerability
